Generator Altitude Derating Calculator
What this calculator measures
Apply entered altitude and temperature derating rates above the entered manufacturer thresholds. Values below a threshold do not increase the rating. Defaults illustrate a model and are not universal generator specifications.
Inputs and units
Use readings and ratings that describe the same equipment, operating interval, and measurement boundary. The sample entries are editable examples; they do not establish the specifications of your generator.
| Input | Example entry or choice |
|---|---|
| Generator Rated Output at Sea Level (kW) | 500 — enter a documented value |
| Site Altitude (m) | 1000 — enter a documented value |
| Ambient Temperature (°C) | 40 — enter a documented value |
| Altitude Derating (% per 100 m above 1000 m) | 1 — enter a documented value |
| Temperature Derating (% per 10 °C above 40 °C) | 3 — enter a documented value |
| Manufacturer full-output altitude threshold (m) | 1000 — enter a documented value |
| Manufacturer full-output temperature threshold (C) | 40 — enter a documented value |
Calculation method
This is an additive derating model. Calculate elevation above the entered altitude threshold and temperature above the entered temperature threshold. Multiply those positive excesses by the corresponding entered reduction rates, add the reductions, and retain the remaining fraction of rated kW. The retained fraction cannot fall below zero or rise above the entered rating.
Worked example
For an illustrative 100 kW base rating, a 1,000 m threshold, 2,000 m site elevation, 1% reduction per 100 m, a 40 C threshold, 50 C ambient, and 3% per 10 C, the reductions are 10% and 3%. The result is 87 kW. At or below both thresholds, the result is 100 kW, not an automatic uprating.
Limitations and checks
Use this only when the manufacturer permits the stated additive treatment. Some equipment uses separate engine and alternator restrictions or a combined site-rating table. Do not apply a reduction again to a rating that already includes it. The tool does not establish cooling-system, fuel-system, or transient limits.
For a practical decision, keep the original readings, the generator model, the relevant manual or specification, and the assumptions alongside the result. A different load, site condition, rating basis, or unit convention can answer a different question even when the arithmetic is correct.
